AD HOC CODEX INTERGOVERNMENTAL TASK FORCE ON FOODS DERIVED FROM BIOTECHNOLOGY

Background :

The ad hoc Intergovernmental TF on FBT was first established in by the 23rd CAC in 1999 to elaborate standards, guidelines or other principles, as appropriate, for foods derived from biotechnology; to coordinate and closely collaborate, as necessary, with appropriate Codex Committees within their mandate as relates to foods derived from biotechnology; and to take full account of existing work carried out by national authorities, FAO, WHO, other international organizations and other relevant international fora.

The task force was dissolved by the 26th CAC in 2003 upon completion of its initial mandate. It was then re-established by the 27th CAC in 2004 with the terms of reference to elaborate standards, guidelines, or other principles, as appropriate, for foods derived from modern biotechnology, taking account, in particular, of the Principles for the Risk Analysis of Foods derived from Modern Biotechnology; to coordinate and closely collaborate, as necessary, with appropriate Codex Committees within their mandate as relates to foods derived from modern biotechnology; and to take account of existing work carried work carried out by national authorities, FAO, WHO, other international organizations and other relevant international fora.

Existing Codex Standards related to foods derived from biotechnology that has been adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission includes;

    2. Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Plants – CAC/GL 45-2003
    3. Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Produced Using Recombinant-DNA Microorganisms – CAC/GL 46-2003
    4. Guideline for the Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Foods Derived from Recombinant-DNA Animals – CAC/GL 68-2008
